Dry-loop DSL

Dry-loop DSL (also known as naked DSL) is a DSL service where the user isn't required to have a land-line telephone service. With regular DSL the data transmits from the telephone switch to a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) splitter. The job of the POTS splitter is to separate DSL high frequency signals from the voice bands, then a wire carrying both services connects from the POTS splitter to the cable head, this then continues to the customer.

With dry-loop DSL, the cable that runs from the switch to the POTS splitter is removed, thus removing the dial tone. This service is generally targeted at those who use cellular service or VoIP exclusively, instead of the traditional land line.
